2017 Battle of the Bean 5k
I understandhow it is. The winter months can quickly become cumbersome. And midwest weather some how compounds the fact: As I write this, I'm fresh off December Holiday break, where it went from 64 and thunderstorms, to overnight lows in the 39's, and today is set to be high's in the lower 50's and sunny. The week before? Not a single degree to speak of, and wind chills 20-30 degrees less.
All this to say -- training come winter is a nasty affair. Luckily, in Kansas City, we have quite a strong running scene. And a quick "check-in" race is never off by more than 2 weeks. Want to celebrate Santa by running 3.1? There's a race for that. Need to run off a New Year's hangover? You have 5k AND half marathon flavors. All tasty treats. And when the hard cold sets in come mid-January, the desired flavors vary, so long as they're hot, though coffee and cocoa are the preferred methods.
And there's a race for that, too. The Battle of the Bean is a celebration of differences, no doubt. You either warm up with a strong cup of Joe, or you prefer something a bit more sweet. But we all run, so sign up, and be sure to pick your poison: Will you be Team Coffee, or Team Cocoa?

KC Running Company's Leawood & Lee's Summit Stores
4760 W 135th St
1555 NE Douglas
Lee's Summit, Missouri
If you opt for early packet pick-up, you can choose one of two locations, both KC Running Company Stores (Leawood & Lee's Summit locations). Given the long pick-up availability times (and multiple locations), don't expect to get jammed up with parking, though lunch-time and post-work tends to get a touch busy. Regardless, less than 10 minutes from start to finish.
Don't want pre-race packet pick-up? You CAN pick-up race day, starting at 6:45 am, and running through to 15 minutes before race time (7:45am).
Race Day Parking
This one is a bit tough... The race has grown in popularity over the years (last year was down -- I think because it was DAAAYUUM cold), so parking is a bit tight. There is parking in front of Foo's, but it's not much, and they discourage parking there (though you won't get a ticket or anything). And, there is a McDonald's and Price Chopper both nearby, but parking is NOT allowed in those lots.
In race's past, a pre-race packet has come out outlining parking. Recommendations seemt to stay pretty much the same. Here's what they've noted...available parking lots are in blue, and red blocks denote NO PARKING...
By the way, if you're wondering where and what the above map is showing, I have included a zoom-able Google map to the location of the start line above. If you want the address, it's Foo's Fabulous Cafe (formerly 'Foo's Fabulous Frozen Custard'), 9421 Mission Road, Leawood, Kansas.
Unchanged for 2017. Not a bad route, but if you don't like your normal neighborhood run, you won't like this. It's not the easiest of courses, as the elevation peaks and dives as runners make their way through the neighborhood to the north of the strip mall. However, it's also not the most difficult (I'm looking at you, Hospital Hill). There are two climbs on-route, and both are manageable. There is no real flat spot on course -- just a heads-up.
Here are the basics for the 2017 route...
That's all I got for now! This is a great way to test your winter legs, and get a good idea where you need to put some work in. And, if you're planning on doing any spring half marathons, this is also a great way to start your training.
See you at the start line.
